You are just as likely to find Susie Davis at the grocery store picking up dinner for her family as you are speaking to an audience of hundreds. She is a wife and mother, relishing the job of building a family above all else. She has been married to her husband Will for twenty-two years.
Will and Susie met in their hometown of Austin, Texas at the church they both attended growing up. Susie felt God’s call to ministry at seventeen. Though she was unsure of the direction or the details, she surrendered to the knowledge that God called her out to be a communicator of His truth and joy. Will was also called to ministry as a teen and jumped into action preaching small town revivals all over the state. His dream after college was to marry Susie, put together a ministry team and travel the world in a yellow school bus a la Billy Graham. Susie politely declined wishing instead to make her home in a house with a family. The two broke-up, imaging their future together was over. After bearing severe separation anxiety for several agonizing “how can we live without each other” days, they got back together both devoted to whatever God brought to their future. Within months, Will proposed and they were engaged. They married and have been building churches ever since. Austin Christian Fellowship, which was founded by Will and Susie in 1993, is the culmination of their life dream. Will is the senior pastor making Susie “the pastor’s wife.”
They have a son, Will III, a junior in college and two daughters, Emily and Sara, who are in high school and junior high respectively. The kids are just as in love with the local church as their parents. (Shhh … no one has told them about the whole “PK” thing.) Will III is a gifted musician. He wrote and recorded the song on Susie’s ministry website. Will has a knack for understanding situations and people thanks to his God given gift of discernment. He decided on a major in Psychology and takes great pleasure in repelling off school buildings at midnight. Emily shares her mother’s dramatic flair and enjoys acting in plays at school and church. She ride horses for fun, goes to the lake with friends, and kindly carts her sister around town. Emily is the tender heart of the Davis family: Missions are her passion. She’s a thoughtful, other’s centered seventeen year old. Sara loves and rides horses, just like her mom and sister. She plays the guitar – most often quite loudly when her brother visits from college – and is quite possibly the happiest person alive. For seven straight years in a row, she received the “most joyful” award from her teachers. Seven different teachers (and her family) all seem to see the very same thing: Sara is a joyful girl.
Susie’s life is a picture of overflowing treasure from a loving God. She wakes daily with the understanding that everything that she holds dear is about Him and from Him: Her husband, her children, her home, her church, her extended family, her friends, her ministry … all gifts from a caring Father.
