Seize the Days

This May, my daughter Emily is graduating from high school.  She’ll be heading out to college in the fall, leaving behind a mother – likely sobbing uncontrollably – that will miss her dearly.  Graduation ceremonies have always left me nostalgic but even more so since my son, Will III, graduated from high school three years ago.  While watching him walk across that stage to receive his diploma, I kept thinking to myself how time flies by.

It’s funny.  When my kids were little, I don’t remember feeling especially frantic about where the time was going.  But now that I am facing releasing yet another teenager out into the world, I feel like time is literally slipping through my fingers.   It makes me grateful that Sara, our fourteen year old, still has a solid four years left at home.   I only hope I don’t become a neurotic mother hanging on to the “baby” so tenaciously that she bolts furiously when she finally gets the chance.  My sweet husband, Will, usually keeps me in check.  He manages my mothering emotionalism with brilliance – perhaps because we’ve been married twenty two years now and I have afforded him with loads of opportunities.

I always dreamed of being a mother.  And to have the chance to parent children with the man of my dreams has been such a blessing.  Not always easy, mind you, but completely rewarding.  And now, as I look toward the end of another season culminating in yet another graduation, I am reminded again of the importance of enjoying the moments I have today.

Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air; drink the drink, taste the fruit … And be thankful.”  It’s just what I am striving to do – to be acutely aware of all the little moments and to thank God for them.  Because while the tendency might be to mark only momentous events like birthdays and graduations, it’s the everyday moments that make life beautiful.  And it’s the indwelling of a very big God, filling all the small moments in my life with His truth and joy that make everyday life a rich celebration.
