Proverbs 15:1-4, 18:4, 20

The Power of our Words

Proverbs 15:1 – 4, 18:4, 20
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.  The wise person makes learning a joy; fools spout only foolishness.  The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.  Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.
A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.
Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on a person’s lips bring satisfaction.

Reflection:
Like it or not, our words are powerful.  They can be a life-giving spring full of wisdom and encouragement, but they can also be a tool to stir up wrath.  As moms we want to consider not only what we say, but how we say it.  I know you probably tell your kids that message as well.  We want our kids to learn from our example.  We want them to see what gentle words sound like.  Our words can be full of strength, yet still be gentle and respectful.

The most effective discipline is not delivered through shouts and screams, but rather through caring, guarded and thoughtful instruction.  Proverbs is full of reminders as to the power of our tongue.  In fact the very last chapter describes the wife of noble character saying, “When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule when she gives instructions.”  As we teach, train and discipline our children let’s never underestimate the power of wise and kind words.

Prayer:
Loving and Kind Heavenly Father, praise you for your wisdom and power.  You alone are the Lord God.  Thank you for your tender mercy toward me.  Lead me to gentle words and a calm spirit.  Please give me self-control when I’m angry, so that I do not hurt others with my words.  Help me to use life-giving words when I speak to my family and friends.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
