Birthday Party Themes

When it comes to our children’s birthday parties, choosing a theme for the party is the first and most important place to start. Once you have a theme in mind, you can take the idea and run with it to create a memorable event. How do you figure out the theme for your child’s party? Look to your child. What does he or she love? The good news is you can build a party around almost any interest your son or daughter has.

Does your daughter love teddy bears? Then plan a Teddy Bear Picnic party. Does your son want to be a fireman? Then a fireman party or fire truck party or Dalmatian party will be great for him. When kids are young, you should choose the theme for them, but as they get older you can give them several choices and let them pick their favorite. You could say something like, “Honey I know you love baseball, trucks and also rocket ships. Which one do you want to have for the theme for your party?”

Here are some possible age appropriate theme ideas to get you started:

Preschool Elementary Older
Circus Pirates Slumber
Farm Airplanes Sports
Angels Tea Party Create Pizzas
Bubbles Bride Party Super Stars
Animals Olympics Scavenger Hunt
Water/Fish Glad Scientist Make Music
Teddy Bears Western/Cowboys Art
Dolls Flowers/Garden Movie Critics
Trucks Trains Fifties
Prince/Princess Medieval Spy/007

Once you have chosen your theme, then you can begin looking for invitations, decorations and party favors that fit into your party idea. Beach balls, pirates hats, art supplies or whatever your theme, be on the lookout for items to accent the idea. The earlier you start, the more likely you are to find things on sale. And remember, don’t get stressed over the party theme, simply choose an idea that fits your child’s interests and enjoy celebrating your child’s life in the process.
