First Communion parties can range from intimate family gatherings at home to catered bashes complete with live music and favors. A child’s First Communion is a joyous occasion that will likely be fondly remembered long after it’s passed, so think about how you’d like your child to recall that day when you are planning your celebration.
One of the biggest challenges when planning your First Communion celebration is striking a balance between the activities for the adult and child guests. Unlike a birthday party, where entertaining the children is clearly priority number one and adults generally serve as chaperones, First Communion celebrations are likely to draw guests of all ages. Keeping the true reason for the celebration as the “theme” for the party will ensure that all those who attend will enjoy themselves.
Use our tips and activities suggestions as ways to enhance your special celebration!
• Since First Communion is typically observed in May, consider taking advantage of the Spring season and hold your party outdoors. Nothing keeps children occupied more easily than a beautiful day and room to run around, so make sure there is space to enjoy the outdoors!
• Unlike a birthday or holiday party, you can go easy on the decorations when celebrating a First Communion. Elegant is best, so consider accenting with white balloons or flowers or let the guest of honor choose the colors. Many party stores have special sections where you can find religious decorations, such as paper goods and centerpieces.
• If you are interested in throwing a theme party, make it educational for your child by perusing the Bible together for potential themes based on Biblical stories. Classic children’s stories usually have great themes and moral messages so sneak a peak at your child’s bookcase for inspiration.
• When hosting an event with many children, it’s never a bad idea to have some planned activities up your sleeve:
• Although not neccesary, favors are a nice touch to any celebration. Consider using a digital camera and portable printer to snap and print photos of your guests enjoying the party. Small frames can be easily found at discount stores and make great keepsakes of blessed events.
