After the flower-filled, brunch buffet extravaganza known as Mother’s Day, sometimes Father’s Day seems to sneak up on us. After all, there aren’t half as many advertisements for one-day only sales or jewelry specials encouraging us to honor our fathers! But even though the hype and prep time are somewhat disproportional, when Father’s Day comes it’s every bit as important to celebrate those all-important male figures in our lives.
The good news is, most dads are easy to please! After all, what most dads really crave is to kick back and hang out with the ones they love most. With a little bit of creative thinking, you can create a Father’s Day celebration that was tailor-made for the head of your household. Think about what Dad really loves and let that dictate the rest.
Sports Nut
Does Dad love anything that involves a ball and competition? Score points by planning a day that revolves around Dad’s favorite past-time. Consider tickets to a game, memorabilia from his favorite team or player or even organize a family version right in your own backyard. If you’re feeling extra creative, let the athletic fun or the region of Dad’s favorite team inspire the day’s meals.
Fitness Fanatic
If health and fitness are at the top of Dad’s priority list, plan a fun and active day for the whole family. Bike along a scenic trail, break out the rollerblades and scooters or have Family Olympics complete with relay races and an award ceremony!
Movie Buff
If Dad has a DVD collection to rival Blockbuster, indulge him by having a movie marathon with some of his favorite flicks- family friendly, of course. Make popcorn, dim the lights and turn your living room into a mini movie theater. Try to sneak in some films with classic “Dad” characters like Father of the Bride, The Family Man, The Parent Trap, and Mrs. Doubtfire.
“Foodie” Father
Does Dad love food, cooking and all things culinary? Dig up his favorite recipes and whip up a meal to remember. If you’re not the cook in the household, make a reservation at a restaurant he’s been dying to try. Possible gift ideas could be cool kitchen gadgets, a subscription to a cooking magazine or publication or even cooking classes for Dad to perfect his technique.
History He-Man
You know Dad is a history buff when he insists on visiting every museum, monument and exhibit on family vacations. Father’s Day can become a mini-vacation for Dad if you set out to explore the history of where you live. Do some research and find out about museums or walking tours close to home. Or to really indulge Dad let him recount his own history with the kids. Just make sure they stifle their groans when he starts a sentence with “When I was young…”!
King for a Day
Even if Dad doesn’t have a special hobby or pastime, it’s still easy to let him know that he’s number one in your book. Make a coupon that entitles dad to “A Day for Dad” where whatever Dad says, goes!
