Compassionate, helpful, honest, loyal, and perseverant: do those sound like qualities you’d like to instill in your daughter? What about pure, resourceful, respectful, responsible, and reverent? If you are looking for a place where your precious daughters can grow into women of integrity, take a look at the country’s newest and fastest-growing scouting organization, American Heritage Girls (AHG). AHG is dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country.
Like other scouting programs, AHG offers merit badges, service projects, leadership opportunities, and outdoor activities. But AHG offers all this in a wholesome, encouraging environment. While other organizations are partnering up with such secular institutions as MTV and Planned Parenthood, American Heritage Girls embraces time-honored moral standards, encouraging each member to grow in her faith in God, personal integrity, family values, citizenship, and community service recognizes that there is no greater purpose than providing a firm foundation for our children.
American Heritage Girls began just 13 years ago in Cincinnati. Disappointed with the ever-shifting values of the Girls Scouts, Patti Garibay decided she could offer a program that provided clear Christian moral guidelines. From 100 Cincinnati-area girls in 1995 to over 6,000 members today, AHG has experienced explosive growth. Thousands of families across the nation have joined AHG as they seek a Christ-oriented program for their daughters.
Growing Women of Integrity: American Heritage Girls is dedicated to growing today’s girls into tomorrow’s women of integrity, and this commitment is evident in every aspect of the program. The AHG program emphasizes learning life skills through a multi-level merit badge program, girl leadership opportunities, teamwork development and confidence building, character development, social development, and spiritual development—all within the context of a safe, nurturing environment.
What Happens at a Troop Meeting? Meetings focus mainly on badge work and service projects. Service is an integral part of the program. Our troops perform many hours of service, from packing backpacks for foster kids to planting flowers at a local historic site. AHG has 60 badges which are categorized into six “frontiers”: Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal Well-Being, and Science and Technology. Some favorite badges have been Pet Care (what’s not to love about having a pet show with 60 other girls?), World Heritage (tasting food from around the world was a big hit!), Creative Crafts (and wow—are these girls creative!), and Daughter of the King (the girls loved making their prayer journals for this badge!).
Getting Started: If you have daughters or granddaughters and are looking for a place for them to have a Christian scouting experience without today’s secular influence, your first step in getting her in this program is to find out if there is an American Heritage Girls troop near you.
