5 Tips for Choosing the Right Virtual World Subscription for Your Child

by Maria Bailey

According to eMarketer, 34% of child Internet users in the U.S. will visit virtual worlds at least once a month in 2008. By 2011, this number will rise to 53%. Because virtual world sites offer a unique combination of online gaming, social networking and communicating, they are very appealing to kids who are looking to connect online. And with the number of virtual worlds increasing every day, there is a growing concern among Moms about Internet safety. Here are a few tips you can use to choose a virtual world for your child that will not only be entertaining, but safe and secure as well.

1. Identify sites with values and priorities that are in line with your family’s interests.

Take the time to visit the “About Us” section on the site to see who is behind the virtual world. Is it a corporation trying to sell a product? Or an educational institution with a certain focus? Knowing the motivations of the creator will go a long way toward helping you understand the messaging and philosophies that your child will interact with.

2. Consider the cost of membership.

Although many sites are free, there may be hidden subscription costs when your child reaches a certain level. Before your child becomes engaged, understand what expenses lay ahead. Most sites will require a parent’s credit card and permission before registration but no one wants to be surprised with monthly fees or charges.

3.  Consider the level of interaction between the games and other characters in the virtual world and your child.

Some sites limit any chat or free dialogue between players but others will allow your child to interact with complete strangers. Ensure your child’s safety by knowing levels of interactivity between members.

4. Become familiar with parental control and involvement options

Many virtual worlds have a section for parents that describes safety settings, parental controls and even fun options for parents to play alongside their children. Before your gets started on the site, educate yourself on the things you can do to help make the world as secure as possible. A little reading goes a long way to make experience fun and safe for the whole family.

5. Get to know your virtual world “neighbors.”

You can learn a lot about a virtual world by the type of players it attracts. Just as you would get to know the friends of your child in a physical world, you should try to get to know the children your child will be interacting with in the virtual world. Ask other moms where their kids are hanging out online and put your motherly instincts to work!
